A business website in New Zealand can cost anything from a small monthly DIY subscription to tens of thousands of dollars for a complex custom build. The useful question isn't simply “what does a website cost?” — it's what you're actually buying at each price point. This guide breaks down current NZ website options, upfront costs, ongoing costs and the factors that make one website cost far more than another.
In New Zealand, a simple business website can range from a low-cost DIY subscription to several thousand dollars for a professionally built website, while complex custom or ecommerce projects can reach tens of thousands of dollars. The final cost depends primarily on who builds the website, the number and complexity of pages, content requirements, functionality, integrations and the level of ongoing support.
| Website approach | Indicative upfront cost | Typical ongoing cost | Who does the build? | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| DIY builder | Low / $0 build | Platform subscription | Business owner | DIY users |
| Freelancer / template build | Hundreds to several thousand | Hosting / support varies | Freelancer / provider | Simple professional sites |
| Productised website service | Varies by model | Often monthly | Provider | Straightforward businesses |
| Studio / agency | Several thousand+ | Hosting / support varies | Professional team | More strategic / custom sites |
| Complex / ecommerce / custom | Several thousand to tens of thousands+ | Varies significantly | Specialist provider | Complex requirements |
Little or no upfront build cost, then a monthly or annual platform subscription where applicable.
Examples: Wix, Squarespace, WordPress.com, Shopify (for ecommerce).
Best suited to: Owners wanting to build it themselves, budget-conscious projects, people willing to learn and manage the platform.
Approximately $15–$60+ per month for mainstream non-ecommerce DIY website plans (indicative; check current provider pricing).
A freelancer or small provider builds a template or customised-template website for a fixed build fee. Hosting may be separate.
Best suited to: Straightforward professional sites where the owner does not want to build it themselves but does not need a full agency project.
Approximately $500–$5,000 depending heavily on scope and provider (indicative NZ market range).
Productised website services standardise scope and production in exchange for simpler, more predictable pricing. Models include lower upfront cost plus monthly service, no upfront build cost plus monthly subscription, or fixed packages.
Best suited to: Straightforward business websites, customers valuing predictable scope, businesses that do not require bespoke development.
Strategy, design, development, potential copywriting and content work, more bespoke structure and more project involvement.
Best suited to: More strategic or custom websites, businesses wanting a tailored professional result, projects needing specialist input.
Ecommerce, customer accounts, membership, booking systems, complex integrations, custom applications, databases, advanced UX or large information architecture.
Best suited to: Businesses with functionality requirements beyond a brochure website.
More unique pages generally require more content, design, QA and setup.
Modifying a template is very different from bespoke UX and visual design.
Who provides the copy, images, photography, video and case studies affects cost significantly.
A contact form is very different from ecommerce, portals, applications or custom calculators.
CRM, ERP, booking, payment or third-party systems add complexity and cost.
Basic technical foundations are different from keyword research, information architecture, content production, migration strategy and redirect work.
Moving products, blogs, resources or customer data can add significant labour.
Workshops, strategy, stakeholder reviews and revision cycles all affect cost.
Hosting, technical support and content changes may be included or charged separately.
A website quote may include some or all of the following. Not every quote includes every item — compare inclusions rather than assuming.
Infrastructure that makes the website available online.
Platform or software maintenance, security, SSL and technical fixes depending on the provider.
Changing wording, replacing images, adding pages, updating staff or changing business information. These may be charged separately.
The web address and its renewal. A domain is usually a relatively small annual cost compared with the website build, but prices vary by registrar and domain extension.
A quote saying “hosting and maintenance included” does not automatically mean unlimited website changes are included.
| Factor | DIY Builder | Freelancer / Small Provider | Productised Service | Custom Studio / Agency |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upfront cost | Low | Low–medium | Model dependent | Medium–high |
| Owner builds site | Yes | No | Usually no | No |
| Customisation | Platform dependent | Moderate | Defined scope | High |
| Ongoing cost | Platform fee | Varies | Often recurring | Varies |
| Content changes | DIY | Usually charged | Model dependent | Usually charged / retainer |
| Complex functionality | Platform dependent | Limited–moderate | Usually limited | Strongest fit |
| Best for | DIY | Straightforward professional site | Productised business sites | Complex / strategic projects |
A proper comparison should consider both the first year and future years. Year 1 may include the build, domain, hosting or platform and initial add-ons. Future years may include hosting, platform subscription, domain renewal, maintenance, apps or plugins, changes and support. Compare websites using total cost of ownership, not just the advertised build price.
If separate charges apply for hosting, maintenance, plugins and changes, the total ownership cost increases over time. Conversely, a monthly productised service may have a low upfront cost but higher cumulative ongoing payments. The purpose is not to show which model is cheapest — it is to show that upfront cost and total cost are different questions.
Hosting, technical maintenance, content changes and the domain are often confused. Hosting makes the website available online; technical maintenance may cover platform updates, security, SSL and technical fixes; content changes update wording, images or pages and may be charged separately; and the domain is the web address itself. A quote saying “hosting and maintenance included” does not automatically mean unlimited content changes are included.
Domain pricing varies by registrar, domain extension and renewal period, and is usually a separate annual cost paid to the registrar. It is normally a relatively small cost compared with the website build itself. ArrowSite customers own and pay for their own domain separately — ArrowSite does not include domain registration in either the Free Website build or the from-$995 New Website build.
ArrowSite is a productised done-for-you website service designed specifically for straightforward small-business brochure websites. It reduces build cost by combining existing online business material where available, proven website structures, AI-assisted production, human quality control and a deliberately narrow product scope. ArrowSite is not equivalent to a custom agency website and does not replace every web-development model.
ArrowSite has two main website pathways. Eligible businesses with enough existing online business content can have their website designed and built for $0, then pay $40/month for Website Hosting with a 12-month minimum. Businesses starting substantially from scratch can have a new website built from $995 plus the same $40/month Website Hosting. See full pricing →
| ArrowSite pathway | Build | First 12 months Website Hosting | Starting first-year service cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Eligible Free Website | $0 | $480 | $480 |
| New Website | From $995 | $480 | From $1,475 |
Excludes the customer's own domain, optional paid changes and optional add-on services.
Customer-requested content changes are separate. Basic Website Updates are $20 per logical change. Technical faults caused by the ArrowSite website or platform remain included at no additional charge.
Not necessarily in pure cash terms. A free or low-cost DIY website builder may cost less if the business owner is happy to build and manage the site themselves. ArrowSite's value proposition is different: eligible businesses avoid the website design/build fee while ArrowSite performs and technically manages the website for them.
ArrowSite deliberately supports a narrower type of website. By specialising in straightforward small-business brochure websites, using existing content where possible and standardising the production process, ArrowSite can remove much of the strategy, custom design and development time involved in larger bespoke projects. It is a different product, not the same product for dramatically less money.
There is no single correct price for a small-business website. A business that needs only a straightforward brochure site may reasonably use a DIY, freelancer or productised website solution, while a business requiring strategy, custom design, ecommerce, integrations or sophisticated SEO may justify spending several thousand dollars or more. The appropriate price is determined by the required outcome and scope.
DIY / simple options
Freelancer, template professional build, or productised website service
More tailored professional website
Strategically complex / custom / ecommerce / integrated website
It depends on what is included. $5,000 may be expensive for a very simple template-based brochure site, but reasonable for a professionally designed small-business website that includes strategy, copywriting, multiple unique pages, SEO work or more customised development. Compare scope and inclusions rather than the headline price alone.
Not automatically. A lower-cost website can be excellent value when the requirement is simple and the scope is clearly defined. It becomes poor value when the solution cannot provide the functionality, reliability, support or quality the business actually needs. Judge the scope and outcome, not the price label alone.
No. Higher prices can reflect more strategy, customisation, functionality and specialist input, but price alone does not guarantee a better business result. The additional scope should create value the business genuinely needs.
Agency pricing often reflects more than page-building. Projects may include strategy, UX, custom design, copywriting, SEO research, development, integrations, testing, project management and ongoing specialist support. Whether a particular quote represents good value depends on which of those services the business actually needs.
Ecommerce generally costs more than a brochure website because it can involve a product catalogue, checkout, payments, shipping, inventory, customer accounts, integrations and data migration. These projects can cost many thousands to tens of thousands of dollars or more depending on complexity. Standard ArrowSite websites are not designed for ecommerce.
Avoid treating a vague “SEO included” claim as equivalent to a full ongoing SEO strategy.
